A group of fishermen from Tamil Nadu were on Tuesday allegedly attacked by Sri Lankan naval men while they were fishing near Katchatheevu, fisheries department officials said. The fishermen from this coastal area had ventured for fishing in 20 boats, officials said, adding, the Lankan naval men allegedly attacked them with ropes and steel pipes causing extensive damage to their fishing nets and communication equipment.

Brace for some warmth this winter as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its December-February forecast on Thursday said that the minimum and maximum temperatures could remain 'normal' to 'above normal' over most parts of Northwest and Northeast India. Both the minimum and maximum will remain below normal in Southern Peninsular and Central India in these winter months. While this could give some respite from the intense cold of North India, it could have a negative impact on the standing rabi crops if the temperature rise is unusual and abnormal.

'A cursory glance at India's SEZs suggests they were not nearly as well located' as compared to China, it in its World Development Report 2009. It added that 'poor location is the main obstacle to success.' In 2007, SEZs were approved in the coastal states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, as well as in the interior states of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, the report said. 'Even in the coastal states, many SEZs are not along the coast,' it said.
